The Lady Penitent seriesLisa SmedmanContinuing where the War of the Spider Queen stopped, this is a trilogy that deals with the drow in the Forgotten Realms after Lolth's return. It's a very good series that doesn't hold back. It does detail a Realm Shattering Event, which many fans don't like, but this is more about people and gods than geography. The characters are very rich and what propel the story forward to a satisfying conclusion. A very good series that really shows how a chaotic good person should behave. It also has some very good twists on drow that were well done.B+
Undead And . . . MaryJanice DavidsonThis is a very good series of books by MaryJanice Davidson. The main character is thrust into the world of vampires but like how she handles herself in her life, she doesn't have the same rules the other vampires have. A light hearted and good read that is very enjoyable. A-
Moon Called, Blood Bound, Iron KissedPatricia BriggsThis is a series about a character named Mercy Thompson. She is a Shifter, able to turn into a coyote, but is rare. She is drawn into the politics of the werewolves and vampires where she lives and has to confront things, some from her past and some new things from the present. A very good series about all of the characters.A-
Personal DemonKelley ArmstrongBringing back a minor half demon character, the new book has Hope infiltrating a gang to find out what is happening with the gangs. It's a very good book and again, it's about the small personal things that effect the characters that keeps the books engaging, instead of huge events. In a first, this book does have two points of view in the story. It works both to give the reader the needed information and to create the dramatic tension. I hope it isn't used often in the series but she did show she could do it.A-
BloodwalkFR DND novelThis is a good novel. I think the only thing that is holding it back from getting a better rating is the fact that I am sick of novels not set in the main area of FR. Having said that, this is written well, has some good character, including several you hate and want to hate them. The bad guys are written well and intelligent and the ending is satisfying. B+
The Orc KingR. A. SalvatoreThe books promised to be a preview of the new FR for 4E DND but I don't think it lives up to that promise. Within its own pages, it tries to show the changes that are happening after the orcs create their own kingdom in the north. I think I am slowly going away from being a Salvatore fan. The book is good, except for the overly technical fights, as it is about the characters and what they do effects things around them. However, it is getting old that the group defeats everything thrown at them. They need to have either pyhrric victories or things work out differently than the characters had hoped. I also wonder if Salvatore even likes writing Driz'zt anymore.C
No Humans InvolvedKelley ArmstrongI really like Ms. Armstrong's books. They pull me in with their fascinating take on the supernatural as well as their characters. This one follows Jaime Vegas on her own adventure. I can't put her books down for long periods and find myself sneaking time to read them. I like the continuity as well. A very good book.A
The Dresden FilesJim ButcherLOVE THEM! This book series, through book nine, are all EXCELLENT books. I have not been able to read this many books in a row by the same author since Kelley Armstrong and I don't know who before that. The characters are great, the writing is wonderful and the continuing story pulls me back. I can't wait for the next book!A+
DarkvisionFR DND novelThis is a tough one to rate. It has a good story and some good characters but there is just something about it. I think it had too many modern references and some non FR things that while they worked, just seemed out of place. However, once I got past that, it was a good story.B-
Red ThunderJohn VarleyA very good book. It is a near future book about space and space travel. Good characters!A
