I didn't get to know Lily that well. She was one of three that we adopted
from a co-worker's friend of my wife. Lily, Lena and Great came to us from
a neglected home. Lily was a big rat and wasn't extremely energetic but she
got around. We noticed within right away that she had lumps and were wondering
what we could do about it.
I took Lily to the vet and we found out she had several cancers. However,
the vet was optimistic and so we scheduled surgery. I took her in and waited
at the vet's office. At the time, I was still at the Bankruptcy court and
my new job hadn't started, so I was able to stay there.
And she made it! She was groggy by the time I could see her but the vet was
happy with how things went. I eventually got to take her home with orders
to bring her back in ten days to take out the stitches. She also had to stay
separate from the rest so they wouldn't chew on her stitches.
The next several days, she was doing great! She had more energy and was soon
recovered and doing well. It was so wonderful to see. Her appointment
soon approached to remove her stitches. I took her in for it and she seemed
sluggish afterward. Even the vet noticed it. We figured it was stress
from the trip.
That evening, we noticed she was sluggish. Jennifer held her as much as she
could. The next morning, I went to my job and Jennifer was thinking about
calling the vet because Lily was still sluggish. She had decided to take her
into the vet regardless. When she picked her up, though, she wasn't breathing
very much and her heartbeat was slow. As she held her, she died.
I got the call at work and it made the rest of the day so tough. It really
convinced me that that job wasn't for me because no one noticed.
After work, we buried her next to Lena. :(
I miss her.
