The story of Daphne is the story of Fawn, Cinder and Esther as well.
We went to the pet store for some supplies for the other five. While we were
there, I went and looked at the ratties. There were these four, cute baby
ratties of all different colors. When I asked Jennifer to look at them, she
fell in love with them, especially one that reminded her of her first rat.
She eventually decided we had to have them all, because we couldn't break them up.
At first, Daphne was called Shnush Shnush because that's the noise she would make.
And it's a good thing, too, because a few times we had to use that to find her!
She was also small, hanging out with Fawn and Esther at the beginning.
Then, it happened. Greta had some spaghetti and Daphne went after it.
That's not a good thing with Greta. And because of it, Daphne lost an eye.
I wasn't worried because it didn't seem bad but Jennifer noticed it and we eventually
took her to the vet. The vet, who is wonderful, said this was common and that
she had some drops to put on it but there was nothing we could have done.
We put the drops on her eye and it eventually looked as the vet wanted it to look.
After that, she seemed to get a bit more aggressive. And we would only hear
the shnush shnush noises occassionally. She also obviously got into the food
more after this because she became a Fat Rat (tm) and remains one until today.

7/11/2007 Over the past several months, we have been trying things to Daphne.
She was very aggressive and so we tried to isolate her to see if that would help.
And she had taken to biting the others on their ear, eliciting a squeek. However,
after putting her in her own cage, which she did seem to like for the most part,
it didn't help. She would still behave aggressive toward the other rats, including
biting their ears.
In the end, we decided to put her back with the others. I think the babies
will always be fighting a bit. But they always end up lying together when
they sleep. So, it must be part of what they do. We don't like it and
don't let them do it when we are around but think they have to figure it out.
So far, it has been working out well.

8/27/2007 - Daphne died over the weekend. I knew she wasn't doing well but
I didn't think it was this bad. I feel so terrible over it. I should
have played with her more, held her more. And now she is gone. It's
so sad.
She was loved and she is missed. I want to hug my baby one more time.
