My History with Role Playing Games
Like many role players, I started with DND. In 1980, my brother ran me through
a small campaign. Later, I joined his group for a year or two. I really
enjoyed playing! I couldn't get enough! I waited every week for that
"magical" time when I could immerse myself in this fun game.
Then my brother slowly stopped playing for various reasons. I knew I wanted
to play so for a while, I DMed a friend. We would play for hours and hours
on Saturdays, alternating playing at my house or his. When we were old enough
for sports, he heard the call but I didn't care.
About that time, my brother and his group completely disbanded as they went off
to college. One of them was still around, as was his brother. I started
DMing first one then both of them in a campaign. In terms of time, this was
my golden years of playing. I think we spent up to sixty hours a week gaming!
About that time, I started DMing some other guys. Eventually, even though
I knew there would be personality conflicts, I brought the groups together and we
played as often as we could through high school.
When college came, that group still played in the summer, as many of us converged
on our parents in the summer. I also had a group at college. This was
probably my silver age in terms of
time. Several times during college, we
would have nothing to do and a DND game would break out.
After college, I had a slight break before I got a group together. I didn't
like it much for various reasons but it was water to a thirsty man. During this time, many from the high school came and went in the group.
When I moved to CR, for the second time I didn't have a group for several months.
Again, when I got one, it wasn't awkward for many reasons, but I wanted a group.
It eventually wasn't worth it and I disbanded. Again, for a while, I didn't
have a group.
When I got a group started again, it lasted for the rest of the time in CR, more
than four years. I was quite happy with it. I had a great group and
looked forward to game night. It was only once a week and that probably made
it more fun. We played DND and some Alternity. We talked about other
games but they never really happened.
Then we moved to DM. However, this time I knew people here and got a group
together before I moved. We weren't going to start for several months, so
I could things ready, but that was fine with me. I started with DND but have
done Vampire, nWoD, Exalted and Alternity since then. Now the group has settled
down with Alternity and I think that's mostly where we will stay.
The group is around but with only one of the original guys. However, I am
having even more fun than ever! The current campaign gets me excited every
week and I look forward to gaming.
In terms of style, I am definitely more of a Storyteller. I am interested
in telling a story about the characters the players play. It has taken me
a long time to figure this out and find a rule set that matches what I want as well
as Alternity does.
